YM1500 is 18 engine hp
YM1700 is 20-21 engine hp
I would not consider doing business with someone that is telling you those kinds of figures . What else is he telling you that you shouldn't believe?
I'm a full service Yanmar dealer in northern Illinois. ....

These tractors are normally not limited by hp, but by weight and traction, but that depends on what you want to do. If you are mowing with a brush cutter, or a finish mower, then you would indeed be able to tell the difference in hp. But the bigger difference may be in weight and traction - I am familiar with the 1500, but not the 1700.

My limited understanding is that the 1st 2 digits (for Yanmar only) is for the horsepower as rated in Japan. Japan evidentally rates thier HP at PTO - I read this somewhere on the net, but I can't recall where. However at any rate it is never more than 3 HP over the 1st 2 digits. I also ran into the same salespitch from several dealers! There are several good dealers out there - KEEP SHOPPING! ....

knoxville, I think you are pretty close on the HP issue, but the gap between engine and PTO can get bigger on the larger units. A Yanmar FX28D is about 28 PTO and most estimate the engine at 32-33. I think Len posted once that multiplying the first 2 numbers by 1.2 gives you a close figure. I like that number and think he is right. ....
